As an earnest traveler exploring the enchanting landscapes of New Mexico, I had the privilege of encountering a remarkable sight that stirred my soul – the Three Sisters. Rising prominently from the vast expanse of the flat desert, these volcanic formations pierced the horizon with their profound presence.
Gazing westward, not as a resident but as an awe-struck visitor, the five extinct volcanoes in Albuquerque, New Mexico, unveiled themselves. Among them, the three largest, affectionately known as the Three Sisters, hold a sacred place in the hearts of the Pueblo Indians of the Rio Grande Valley.
In this oil pastel on paper artwork, created in the abstract expressionism style, I strive to convey the spiritual connection and reverence that envelops these volcanic sentinels. Though their physical stature may be modest, their significance is immeasurable. The Pueblo Indians, along with the Western Pueblos, Navajos, and Apaches, believe that these ancient landforms were shaped by spiritual beings in the distant past.
Guiding traders and pilgrims on their arduous journeys, these volcanic landmarks served as a testament to the rich cultural tapestry of New Mexico. Beyond their practical function, they were perceived as conduits to the Spirit World, forging a connection between the present, the ancestors, and the timeless origins of existence.
